      Starting a Career In Health; Check list of Programmes in 2018/19 Admissions

      Health care professionals prevent and treat diseases and also offer promotional and rehabilitative services. Health training is usually offered by tertiary educational institutions such as the universities and the training institutions.

      In Ghana, admission into health training institutions is highly competitive especially in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry (Doctor), Nursing and Midwifery. Several applicants are turned whereas other relevant health programmes are less pursued.

      Most universities have opened for applications from qualified candidates for their 2018/19 admissions. Top Ghanaian government tertiary institutions offering programmes in the health sciences include the University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC, UDS, UHAS and Kintampo College of Health.

      The University of Ghana is offering Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Dental Surgery and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).  Other programmes include Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Dietetics, Medical Laboratory, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Radiography.

      Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is also offering Bachelor of Medicine and Dental Surgery, Doctor of Optometry and Doctor of Pharmacy. Other programmes include Bachelor of Science in Herbal Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology, Sports and Exercise Science, Nursing, Midwifery, Sonography and Disability & Rehabilitation Studies.

      Also, the University of Cape Coast is offering programmes in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Optometry, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Community Mental Health Nursing. Other programmes include Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Physician Assistant Studies, Diagnostic Imaging Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Health Information Management and Sports and Exercise Science.

      The University of Development studies is also offering Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medical Laboratory Sciences. Other programmes include Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Midwifery and Community Nutrition.

      The University of Health and Allied Sciences is also offering Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Medical Imaging (Radiography),  Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physician Assistantship,  Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health Nursing, Doctor of Pharmacy and Public Health.

      The Kintampo College of Health is also offering Bachelor of Science in Community Mental Health and Community Medicine and Health (Physician Assistanship). Diploma programmes offered by the college include Medical Laboratory Technology, Health Information, Community Health- Disease control and surveillance, Community Health – Nutrition, Health Promotion and Social Marketing and Dental Surgery. The college is also offering certificate programmes in Community Health and Health Records Management.

      Government manned Nursing Training Colleges across the country also offer programmes in Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, Mental Health Nursing and Community Health Nursing. Some also offer certificate programmes in Health Assistant Clinicals – Enrolled Nurses and Health Assistant Practicals – Community Health Nurses.
