Diploma Nursing Programs

The diploma nursing program is a 3year (6 semesters in all) basic nursing education program. Currently, there are four different specializations: General Nursing, Midwifery, Mental Health Nursing and Community Health Nursing. Applicants are made to choose one when applying for the program.

Candidate who successfully go through basic nursing/midwifery education are required to take the prescribed examination conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. Successful candidates will be required to undergo 1year mandatory internship and then register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana before they can practice as Professional Nurses or Midwives in Ghana.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 35years. West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) holders must have an aggregate score of thirty (30) or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 electives. They must have Credits (A1 – C6) in three Core Subjects i.e. English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. Applicants must also have Credits (A1 – C6) in three Elective Subjects.

Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) holders must have an aggregate score of Twenty-Four (24) or better in six subjects, comprising 3 core and 3 electives. They must have Credits (A– D) in three Core Subjects i.e. English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. Applicants must also have Credits (A – D) in three Electives Subjects.

ADMISSION

Admissions are usually done August. However, in government training institutions, admissions forms are sold several months before the month of admission. Applicants may be required to go through interview session and entry examination.  Some private training institutions admit students twice in a year; i.e in February and in August.

TRAINING INSTITUTIONS

Diploma nursing programs are offered by government-manned nursing training colleges and private nursing training institutions. Both institutions are regulated by the Nursing & Midwifery Council and they offer a similar curriculum; with some institutions adding some special courses to augment their training. The training period is the same for both institutions (3years and 6 semesters in all). Diploma training institutions are often affiliated to a university that issue certificate to students after successful completion.
